Some seven hours after crews were called out, our pictures show the Hatherley Road fire aftermath – an aerial ladder from Basingstoke helps a fireman on the ground stop little pockets of fire from breaking out again.

You can see from the picture above that the heat from the fire was so high that the plastic melted on the street light.

34 firefighters were at the scene at the fire’s height, involving appliances from a wide area including two from Winchester, two from Eastleigh, Basingstoke, Redbridge and St Mary’s.

Ten properties – including one of a family friend of the staff at Winchester Today – were evacuated to stay the rest of the night with friends or in a hotel because of a partial collapse of the front of the building.

You may remember that we have talked about this area of land and new property before at Winchester Today. Residents of Hatherley Road had previously made it clear that the original plans were too big.
