Brexit Referendum

Reaction has been swift to this morning’s Brexit Ruling from the High Court that the Prime Minister – Theresa May – cannot trigger Article 50 to start the UK’s departure from the EU without first putting it to MPs to vote in the House of Commons.

The PM has already made it clear that she would set the wheels in motion by the end of March.

International Trade Scretary Liam Fox spoke to the Commons after the decision and said that the Government was “disappointed” by the court’s judgment, and that an appeal would be lodged. He also said that the Government was “determined” to respect the result of the Referendum.

Winchester’s MP Steve Brine gave his reaction to this morning’s announcement to Winchester Today:

“The country voted to leave the European Union in a Referendum approved by Act of Parliament.

“The government is determined to respect the result of the Referendum. The PM has been clear we will appeal the judgment.”
