SWT services have started to recover after a Network Rail signalling problem this morning.
Both have apologised as they struggled to get Winchester’s commuters to work this morning.
South West Trains bore the brunt on services in and out of London Waterloo in a situation that was largely out of their control.
Trains were either cancelled or subject to 90-minute delays after a signal blackout at Earlsfield left South West Trains unable to run to Clapham Junction and London Waterloo.
A South West Trains spokesperson told Winchester Today that they did their very best they could to get around the problem: “We are very sorry for the disruption being experienced by our passengers today. This is as a result of a signalling system failure in the Earlsfied area and urgent work to repair a fault affecting a set of points in the Byfleet & New Haw area.
“Network Rail engineers have restored the signalling and we are working hard to get trains back into circulation around the network.
“Detailed travel advice for passengers is being regularly updated on our website and Twitter feed and we have also deployed extra staff at key stations to help customers.”
