South Western Railway and Network Rail have issued a joint apology for yesterday’s chaos which saw services grind to a halt on the SWR network.

The statement reads as follows:

We would like to apologise to you for the severe disruption to journeys on main and suburban line services yesterday morning, when services were already amended due to the on-going RMT industrial action.

This was caused by signalling cable faults between Woking and Surbiton stations that were serious enough for us to advise you not to travel on our network.

Network Rail engineers worked hard through the morning to fix the problem.

By 11am the line was open again, nonetheless many of you will have had delayed and crowded journeys for the rest of the day.

We know it’s not the service you expect or deserve, and we are working hard to improve performance.

Once again, we’re sorry, and thank you for your patience yesterday.
