Winchester City’s unbeaten run has finally come to an end after The Citizens were beaten 1-0 away at Bideford AFC in the Evo-Stik League South Division One South on a wet and blustery Saturday afternoon by the sea.

City travelled to North Devon on the back of a fine 4-1 away triumph just three days prior and only made one change with winger, Rob Carr, unavailable, so Jake Rawkins took his place.

The first-half was tight with the hosts coming close early on shooting just over the crossbar. Rawkins then came close for City when his effort was saved by the hosts’ keeper.

The second-half continued in much the same vein before Ryan Turner scored a wonderful volley from the corner of the penalty box to leave Ryan Pryce with no chance.

City pushed for an equaliser, with Josh Harfield having several headers wide, but a big chance wasn’t forthcoming. Step forward substitute, Tyrell Mitford, who struck a wonderful effort in stoppage time that unfortunately hit the post.

However, with AFC Totton also losing and Evesham United only drawing, City are still in a strong position knowing that if they win their game in hand, they can reach the play-offs, a place they will then be hoping to remain for the rest of the season.

Up next for City is a Southampton Senior Cup Semi-Final against AFC Stoneham at Hamble Club on Tuesday night – with a place in the final against Alresford Town at stake, the showpiece fixture that is played at Southampton FC’s St. Mary’s Stadium.
