Winchester’s Liberal Democrats say it was “hard work” that got the Lib Dems over the line in the 2019 Local Elections.

With Friday’s counting complete in the English Local Elections, it became clear that the Conservatives had suffered their worst showing in 24 years.

The Conservatives lost 1,335 seats across the country. Five of those were in Winchester, going straight to the Lib Dems. Winchester City Council is now controlled by them by a majority of 9 (Liberal Democrats 27 , Conservatives 18.)

Martin Tod was re-elected for the Liberal Democrat’s in the St Paul Ward and spoke to the Winchester Today / Winchester Radio newsroom once it had become clear around 4am that the victory hadn’t even been close: “The start point has been that there’s been a lot of hard work.

“We’ve spoken to thousands of people around the district for their views – we’ve heard their views, put it with our values and then gone back to them to tell them what we’re going to do.

“We put up posters, we delivered leaflets… it’s been a team effort and a lot of fun.”
